In total, more than a thousand hours of work were needed to prepare Brazilian Cinema in the 20th Century. The work is a fascinating journey through all the cinematic cycles that Brazil lived, from the pioneering Belle Époque, through the great studios like Atlântica and Cinédia, Cinema Novo, the urban comedies of the 70's, until the resumption in the late 90's. This incredibly elaborate (and surprisingly little-known) film traces the origins of Quilombo, which began as a community of freed slaves. The colony becomes a safe harbor for other outcasts of the world, including Indians and Jews. Ganga Zumba (Toni Tornado) becomes president of Quilombo, the first freely elected leader in the Western Hemisphere. Naturally, the ruling Portuguese want to subjugate Zumba and his followers, but the Quilombians are ready for their would-be oppressors. The end of this Brave New World is not pleasant, but the followers of Zumba and his ideals take to the hills, where they honor his memory to this day. Writer/director Carlos Diegues takes every available opportunity to compare the rise and fall of Quilombo with the state of affairs in modern-day Brazil.

The documentary VINTE - RioFilme, 20 anos de cinema brasileiro is a celebration of these two decades of Brazilian cinema, revealing the role of RioFilme in its recent history. Created in late 1992, shortly after the impeachment of Fernando Collor and shortly before the Audiovisual Law, RioFilme is the daughter of our democratic consolidation and the mother of the recovery, which contributed to and often inaugurated different phases of Brazilian cinema, until the current strengthening of its economy and the multiplication of the diversity of its films.
