In Esdras Baptista's film archives, kept at his home for decades, one can feel the fervor of those who believed in a new tomorrow. Filmed in Brazil in the early 1960s, in the heat of a libertarian political movement, the filmmaker's images materialize the incandescence of collective desires at the historic moment of their emergence. Utopia, though unattainable, is never a mere abstraction. A force that mobilizes actions and feelings, it constitutes the impetus necessary for human existence.

Lambusca, a man from the State of Paraíba, Brazil, goes to São Paulo, looking for a job. But he ends up working for a group of fishy loan sharks, collecting money. In one of his visits, the debtor dies. The police then starts chasing him, believing he had murdered the man.

Otavio is an idealistic union leader trying to organize workers at a factory to resist the company's exploitative practices. His son, Tião, one of the employees, is more of a realist and doesn't want to risk losing his job by striking. This clash of perspectives puts the father and son at odds. Fortunately, Tião's mother, Romana, is on hand to act as a moderator between the two opinionated men.

In Rio de Janeiro, a successful yet underpaid young accountant lives with his pregnant wife in small apartment in middle class neighborhood of Copacabana. Unsatisfied with their way of life, the couple decides to accept the offer of becoming housekeepers of a rich man's vacation residence in a beach town.

Born a fully grown black man in a village in the Brazilian jungle, Macunaíma later magically transforms into a white man before making an adventure-filled trip to the city of São Paulo. Once there, he becomes something of a dandy, falling in love with Ci, a revolutionary who dies in an accidental bombing. After robbing a ruthless industrialist, Macunaima returns to his village where he finds his newly acquired knowledge and possessions of little use.
