An elderly man visits his mentally ill wife in a psychiatric hospital. Years earlier, she had tried to drown their child and then take her own life. Crushed by guilt and powerless to change what has happened, he stays on at the clinic as a janitor. Soon, their daughter comes to tell him she is getting married, and with her arrival come painful memories and tormenting visions.

A blacksmith is chased out of the village by the sinister village chief and forced to move to the forest with his wife and two sons. The blacksmith's younger son is disabled, and the other children in the village tease him. The older son aspires to become a doctor in order to fix his brother's leg. The film depicts the bond between a father and his sons. Only 18 minutes survive.

Rinzou tries to pressure Gosuke into marrying his daughter, Osumi, to him to make up for his debts. In a chance encounter the father and daughter become acquainted with Asahiko, the Count's heir, and his fiancée, Kimiko, which results in Osumi moving into the Count's villa as a live-in maid. After a night of drinking, celebrating the Doll's Festival/Hinamatsuri, Asahiko jokingly gives a ring to Osumi, who interprets the act as an engagement. The next day she goes to tell her father the news and give him the ring; soon after a drunken Rinzou shows up wanting repayment so Gosuke shows him the ring. Based on a contemporary set novel by Shunyo Yanagawa, this film was adapted to the Japanese stage with multiple film versions to follow, including director Naruse Mikio’s take in 1932. Director Masao Inoue also stars in this 1916 adaption which follows the destruction of a businessman and his family as mounting scandals reakwaken lingering hatreds and induce new crimes. This surviving fragment features three sequences from the original film, including its denouement.
