This movie doesn't have any coherent plot. It's the portrait of the lives of different people in the hard years of post-war in Spain (the 40's), and how they manage to survive in a country desolated by the war. Like other films: La colmena or Roma (Fellini) it shows us lots of characters and some moments of their lives.

A woman nearing her forties, Andrea Soriana, has always pushed aside personal questions and romantic relationships in pursuit of professional success. Now a major illness forces her to reconsider her life--work, family, friendships, men-- causing a psychological and emotional crisis pushes her toward a drastic decision.

After his son dies, an elderly man comes back to Spain from the US and hopes to find out which of his granddaughters is true, and which one is bastard.

In the mid-fifties, El Nini lives in the poorest and most forgotten rural Castile (Spain). He is a child with no more knowledge than those provided by nature. El Nini lives with his father in a cave, and with him he devotes himself to the hunting of water rats, the only means of subsistence they know. But when they are tried to deprive them of their roof and their livelihood, violence will erupt uncontrollably.

Guadalupe is an orphan as a child by Eulalio host and Euphrasia, who incite to steal and commit crimes. She opposes and decides to leave the house to avoid it in the company of a goldfinch and his trusty cat. The girl comes to live independently but failures will accumulate, until he accidentally meets Baby, a lady of good family, and among them emerges a sincere friendship.
