A small Spanish town, Villar del Río, is alerted to the upcoming visit of American diplomats and its ruling townsmen begin preparations to impress the American visitors, in the hopes of benefiting under the Marshall Plan. Hoping to demonstrate the side of Spanish culture with which the visiting foreign officials would be more familiarized, the Castilian citizens don unfamiliar Andalusian costumes, hire a renowned flamenco performer, and re-decorate their town in Andalusian style, meantime waiting for their uncertain arrival.

Maribel (Natalia Dicenta) is a prostitute working in Madrid in the late fifties. One night he meets Marcelino (Carlos Hipolito), shy and quiet man who falls for her. For Maribel is in principle a client more, but gradually begins to feel attracted to the shy provincial, owner of a chocolate factory in Soria. Pili (Nathalie Seseña), Rufi (Mireia Ros) and Nini (Malena Alterio), the companions of Maribel, truculent by nature suspicious of this relationship and begin to suspect that the provincial could be a murderer. Andrés, a dowdy Spaniard, goes to Paris on holiday, hoping to meet a pretty French girl. His wishes may come true after meeting Ninette, his landlord's sensual and possessive young daughter.

The strange disappearance of the dogs of his neighbors leads Juan to investigate the case on his own. It ends up finding out that the author of the robberies is a young woman called Eloísa, the cocky daughter of a scientist who uses dogs to create an antidote against sleep. Juan and Eloísa fall in love, but he will ask her to leave her luxurious mansion to live only with his salary.

Mauricio is a Frenchman who arrived in Barcelona fleeing from justice. He takes refuge in a hostel in Chinatown and falls in love with Pilar, the niece of the owner. When a murder is committed in the neighborhood, Mauricio becomes the prime suspect.

The story unfolds through the twists and turns of a strange curse attributed to a jewel that, passed from hand to hand, carries a deadly destiny. Its theme spans the three countries where it was filmed (Spain, Mexico, and Argentina), beginning in Spain and then moving to Mexico. The jewel, which takes on the character of another figure in the narrative as it travels through different parts of the world, arrives in Buenos Aires. The film ultimately presents the jewel's final destination in Mexico, where its owner dies, like others who were also marked by its malevolent influence.
