In a small village close to the mountains, Mariana and Puiu are a young family with two children: Carmen and Mircea. Without any hope, Mariana leaves the hospital and rushes to take Carmen home: while one life ends, another one begins to flicker.

A former world-famous conductor of the Bolshoï orchestra, known as "The Maëstro", Andreï Filipov had seen his career publicly broken by Leonid Brezhnev for hiring Jewish musicians and now works cleaning the concert hall where he once directed. She and the keeper have no recourse but to become acquainted, and for the next few days, that is what they do. Eventually, the man who left her in the lurch comes back to look for her, and finds her at the lighthouse.

Andrei is the head of a political party, a member of parliament and, at the same time, a prosperous businessman. He stopped being young a good number of years ago, but his love affair with the beautiful dancer Ana gives him the feeling of a second youth. On their way back from a mountain getaway, Andrei's car causes an accident, killing one man and injuring another. The victims were all former colleagues of Ana's band, and the deceased was Ana's boyfriend. The investigation into the cause of the accident and especially the statements of the survivor incriminate Andrei.

In the beginning, the crew is introduced as they juggle their dual roles as State-supported propagandists who laud their government and society, and as private movie makers working on their own film. Next, they are in a restaurant looking for suitable locations to film when the eatery’s owner is induced to wax long and lugubriously on his miserable life. In the last segment, two extras are in the background of a scene, sitting at a table in a restaurant. It slowly becomes apparent to one of them that the man he’s sitting with tortured him more than 40 years ago at a Nazi concentration camp during World War II.

In 1930s Romania, a desperate gambler exploits an elderly man for casino luck, an act that triggers his own severe psychological undoing.
