Lennart Nilsson was a Swedish photographer and scientist. He was noted for his photographs of human embryos and other medical subjects once considered unphotographable, and more generally for his extreme macro photography. He was also considered to be among Sweden’s first modern photojournalists.

The method quickly became a standard in many mental hospitals and the author was awarded the Nobel Prize. But surgical intervention against mental illness did not stop with the lobotomies.
