In early 19th-century England, dire financial straits reacquaint the aristocratic Anne Elliot with her wealthy ex-fiance Frederick Wentworth. The two must choose between either putting the past behind them or listening to their hearts.

Steve runs away from home, having argued with his father, and hides in a slate mine where his friend Paul finds him and brings him back. However, on returning to their village the two boys find the place completely deserted. Or so they think.

Mrs. Silly, a woman who has lost her husband to another, is now about to lose her son to an expensive boarding school, compliments of her ex's money. Confronted with these losses, Mrs. Silly realizes she must regain her identity. Based on a short story by Edith Wharton. A lady's maid named Hartley finds employment with Mrs. Brympton, a lady who is confined to her country estate because of delicate health. Almost immediately Ms. Hartley realizes something ominous is occurring in the old house.
