John Cranford is a U.S. customs agent dedicated to stem the activities of a gang of opium smugglers. After successfully closing the case, Cranford takes a vacation on Pidgin Island, near Kingston, Ontario. Here he meets the beautiful Diana Wynne, whose mysterious behavior both fascinates and attracts him. It turns out that Diana is herself a secret service agent, bent on trapping notorious pearl smuggler Michael Smeed.

"Mismates" is the story of a wealthy youth who, against his mother's wishes, marries a poor girl and is disowned. At first determined to support himself and his wife, he soon craves the accustomed luxury and deserts his wife and child. On false information provided by the boy's mother and substantiated by himself the wife is sent to jail and the child kidnapped by the husband. This is where the drama kicks in.

Wealthy young American Carrington O'Connell is traveling Europe with a "social advisor" to become more polished and sophisticated. While stopping at an inn in Switzerland, he is entranced by pretty young Adrienne Le Blanc, whose parents own the inn and in which she entertains travelers. Adrienne falls for him, but his "advisor" warns him against such a socially "unacceptable" relationship, and he reluctantly leaves. Adrienne soon gets a contract with a theatrical agent for appearances at a musical hall in America, where she happens to meet Carrington's wealthy father Michael. Complications ensue.

After Trueman Tisdale, a young officer in the Coast Guard, marries Martha, a pretty young woman, he discovers that her previous relationship with a ne'er-do-well named Nate Sanderson has created gossip in their New England hometown of Bayport.

John spies his girlfriend embracing his brother. Stunned, John deposits the family's money and leaves the country. Years later he returns to find his brother dead, the plantation in ruins, and that he is suspected of stealing the money.

The marriage of Jim and Esther spirals downhill rapidly when Esther purchases a sable coat for herself. Hoping to live up to her expensive accessory, Esther soon is keeping company with caddish Morrell. Jim brings his wife's galavanting to an abrupt end by committing suicide. In order to protect Grant Demarest from a siren named Margot, Stuart Ames attempts to disillusion him about the girl. Margot threatens to kill herself; Grant reaches for the gun and is accidentally shot. Blaming himself for his friend's death, Stuart books passage on a liner, where he meets Rene, the daughter of a dishonest dealer in gems. They are shipwrecked, and Rene returns to the United States, becoming the guest of Margot, her childhood friend. Rene is later lured to a wilderness cabin by Dysart (an accomplice of Rene's father who is disguised as a count); he attempts to assault her, and Ames, who has followed them, knocks him over a cliff. Ames and Rene make plans to be married.

Young playwright Harold Montague travels to the Kentucky mountains to seek the local color that his manager has complained is lacking in his new play. There he falls in love with Kate Kendall, a mountain girl, and tries to befriend a group of moonshiners, who regard him with suspicion because of their fear of revenue officers.

Broad-minded rector Stephen Carey is ousted from his church by his vestrymen and befriends Claudia Bigelow, a young divorcée who defended his position in the church. Claudia's carelessness in leaving a cigarette burning causes Jimsy, the housekeeper's son, to go blind. Stephen's prayers restore the boy's sight, and a happy future is predicted for all.

In the sordid shirt factory in which she works, Sadie Hicks dreams of the great outdoors. Surrounded by men of puny minds and flabby bodies, her fancy goes out to great manhood that is strong of mind and muscle. Translated in the language of the shirt factory life she knows best, she finds that she admires a man with a 44 chest. She sees a shipment of 44s all ready to be sent to Arizona, and she writes a little note and tucks it into one of the shirts. On account of a rush order, the box is sent to Canada and the shirt with Sadie's note reaches John Stoddard, a wealthy civil engineer, who prefers the life of the woods to the polite society enjoyed by his family and friends.

When oil magnate Thomas Waring receives a letter from his old friend, Mrs. Juliet Smith, suggesting that his beloved daughter Maida spend her vacation at Mrs. Smith's island home, Waring encourages Maida to accept as he has to go East on business. After Mrs. Smith supposedly gets Maida, Waring receives a call from the real Mrs. Smith, who says that Maida has left with an impostor.

The Honorable Hugh Wentworth, arriving from England with a valuable diamond to millionaire Edward Ensloe. Ensloe's eldest daughter Eleanor has romantic designs on Hugh, but he is more attracted to her tomboy sister Peggy. Eleanor is concerned with fashion and society while Peggy prefers tomboy pursuits with her younger brother Bob.

Connie urges her friend Molly and Molly's boyfriend Tom to attend a party with her. Molly, who has never tried alcohol before, is temporarily blinded by her first drink. Connie, feeling Molly's blindness is her fault, agrees to marry a wealthy man in order to get the money to restore Molly's sight. Complications ensue.

Lionel and Daniel Houston both love a Southern beauty named Virginia, and when she finally chooses Daniel, Lionel angrily moves North and turns his full attention to the acquisition of wealth. Virginia dies in childbirth, leaving Daniel to rear little Virginia alone. A rich aunt promises to leave Daniel a fortune provided he resume contact with his brother, whereupon Virginia, determined to effect a reconciliation between the two men, answers Lionel's ad for a cook and settles into his luxurious estate. There Virginia meets and falls in love with Lionel's adopted son Perry Arnold, but faces stiff competition in Rose Mason, in reality a crook who hopes to obtain Lionel's secret stock market papers. In the end, Virginia not only unmasks Rose's plot and wins Perry, but reunites her long-estranged father and uncle.

George, who was a landscape painter, had selected the picturesque locale in the south for his work, and while there became infatuated with Jill Jamison, a mountain girl, and daughter of Jimmy Jamison, owner of the Bat Cave Hotel. The friendship between the girl and George aroused the enmity of Squid Archer, boss of the moonshining gang.

In this comedy-drama, May Allison plays Teddy Hayden, a very independent society miss. When her childhood sweetheart, Gerry West (Wallace MacDonald) takes her to a Greenwich Village cafe, she thinks she's found where she belongs. So she spends all her time there and gets herself in a load of trouble.

Helen Corning, a rich "Yankee" widow's daughter, antagonizes her Southern neighbors when she speeds in her roadster. After she causes Brett Page's stalled Ford to overturn, Helen rams Judge Carroll's wagon, upsetting his eggs which fly into his whiskers. Furious, the Judge sends Helen to jail for thirty days. Brett, taking advantage of the town's ancient law that allows townspeople to hire prisoners for twenty cents per day, takes the uncooperative Helen into his home to cook and clean.

Mary, the three-year-old daughter of John Denby, a railroad president, is kidnapped, and all trace of her is lost. Fourteen years elapse. There has been a terrible wreck on Denby's road and Graham, the engineer, is made the scapegoat. In spite of the fact that he merely obeyed orders, he is sent of to prison. Mary is returned to Denby, the kidnapper explaining that he stole her when his own little daughter was killed, but that now he feels he must return her to her parents.
