The couple have tried many things in their lives: studying, finding a job. But none of these have fully satisfied them. But they have managed to create a home for themselves and now they want to offer it to a third child... Vera and her parents are delighted with the boy, who is still only a trial. But Karel, who himself lives with a sense of failure in his life, is finding it difficult and slow to adjust to the new member of the family...

On their tenth wedding anniversary, painter František and his wife Jarmila return to their isolated home. While František is content with a quiet, unambitious existence, Jarmila perceives their orderly life as stagnant water rather than true living. What is intended as a private celebration becomes a pivotal moment where an unforeseen event forces František to reveal his true character through his actions.

Set in World War 2 as the Germans occupy Czechoslovakia, teenage Emilka's father is murdered by the Nazis, but she is selected for special treatment by virtue of being blonde. The apartment in the old house is occupied by a large family: a couple with three daughters, one of whom lives here with her husband and child. The young people want their own apartment, while the mother, who is indiscriminately directing the whole family, wants to exchange the current apartment for a larger one. At the moment when the son-in-law wants to show the housing committee of the cooperative the apartment in the worst possible condition, the mother frantically cleans up the artificial mess, because at the same time more people are coming in to exchange it. A group of wealthy American Jewish businessmen have been captured by the SS and are told that they are to be traded to the American army for several SS officers. However, these hostages are being required to pay bribes for their "transportation costs." In order to ensure that the businessmen will be more cooperative in paying up, a beautiful female singer is placed in their midst as a bargaining chip. The group of hostages are then placed on a train which is supposed to take them to the ship that will deliver them to freedom, but a series of "mishaps" delays their escape.

The story from a small Czech mountain village takes place over five days in February 1948 and describes the fate of a young couple, Tomáš and Vendula, against the backdrop of events that reflect the atmosphere of the time, with a political crisis brewing and radical changes on the horizon. The preparations for the wedding of the young couple – miner Tomáš and teacher Vendula – are not going according to plan. Food such as sugar, butter, and bread are still rationed. In addition to their personal problems, the escalating political situation further complicates matters. The lives of Tomáš and Vendula are affected by the disputes between their grandfathers – retired miner Václav Kašpar and his childhood friend, grocer Rynda. The youngest descendants of the feuding families thus find themselves in the fateful position of Romeo and Juliet.

An impoverished merchant, decided to sell a precious painting of his deceased wife, wanders into a fairy-tale castle at night, where he loses his painting and is given lavish gifts of clothes and jewelry for his two vain daughters. He then picks a rose himself for his youngest, Beauty. He is caught by the lord of the castle, a terrible monster, who sets a condition that the merchant either returns or one of his daughters voluntarily comes as a sacrifice for his father.
