The journey of a woman from a mere homemaker to a woman seeking her self identity. This search for self identity is sparked off by a young bohemian photographer, with whom she falls in love while he photographs her for a magazine doing her daily chores.

A village is inhabited mainly by women whose husbands are in the cities earning a living. Taking advantage of the situation, a man who returns to his village succeeds in seducing most of the women.

Sita Sinha has brought up her son, Bihari and his friend, Amar as her own. The three are very close to each other. When they grow up they maintain their friendship and love for each other. Amar marries wealthy Jaya, and Bihari marries a labourer. Amar's dad, Mr. Saxena does not like Bihari, and schemes to separate them. He succeeds, and Bihari is humiliated. Bihari blames Amar, and swears to bring about his downfall at all costs.

Based on Bengali story “Ghar Bari” by Dibyendu Palit, a former revolutionary who has deserted the movement lives in fear of running into old colleagues. Meanwhile he pushes his wife into modelling, and later seamier projects, with tragic consequences.

Set in Nainital, Manju is about Vimala Devi, a teacher in a boarding school, who waits in hope for the winter of her discontent to vanish. Another important character is Buddhu, who waits for his Englishman father to return to Nainital. Loneliness and endless waiting are recurring motifs in the film.

Parvati, devotee of Goddess Kali, is raped while trying to protect the temple jewels. She is saved by a god man who grants her special powers and asks her to kill the culprits and get back the jewels.
