A Polish lieutenant from the Royal Air Force comes home with his British wife and faces political persecution.

Spring of 1968, Warsaw. The fight for influence between top level Communist officials is the background to a developing love story between a young couple who are engaged in student protests. Both the young couple and their parents will pay a high price for their decisions, and their Jewish roots, which up until now seemed to have no meaning, but which will soon determine their fates.

A well-known wheeler dealer joins the underground opposition to avoid responsibility after stealing valuable coins. When he is released from prison, he sets up a private bank with high interest rates together with a Security Service colonel. However, the colonel has bigger ambitions.

He first works in the militia, then as a driver for the director of a wagon factory. He becomes involved with Karolina, who is older than him, becomes the lover of Zula, his employer's wife, and develops deep feelings for the beautiful and sensitive Blanka. Ryszard cannot find his place and ends up alone. Finally, he decides to take advantage of the amnesty decree and reveal himself.

World War II. The Germans enter Sosnowiec, which complicates the relationship between the three friendly children.

The film evokes the era of the 1831 cholera epidemic and the peasant uprising which followed it. The way of Doctor Balás, cholera commissioner, and district administrator Hunyor leads through the mountains of Zemplén and is lined by unburied corpses, peasants dying of the illness and of overdoses of bismuth, by the miserably starving population, the healthy digging mass-graves and by uncultivated lands.

A former partisan now 38 years old remembers his childhood in the war.
