Jocasta, an 18-year-old sociology student and daughter of communist activist Túlio Silveira, is actively involved in the country's political landscape. She is in love with Laio—her polar opposite—a disengaged, esoteric young man who lives off his wealthy father's allowance. A mystic, Laio makes no move without consulting his guru and friend Argemiro, whom he turns to upon learning of Jocasta's pregnancy. The cowrie shell reading reveals that his son is destined to kill him and enter into a romantic relationship with his mother. O Direito de Nascer is a Brazilian telenovela produced by JPO Produções and broadcast by SBT from May 21 to October 2, 2001. Based on the Cuban radio serial El Derecho de Nacer (1940), written by Félix B. Caignet, it was adapted by Aziz Bajur, with collaboration from Jayme Camargo and Alcione Carvalho. Directed by Roberto Talma and José Paulo Vallone, the telenovela stars Guilhermina Guinle, João Vitti, Dhu Moraes, Jorge Pontual, Ana Cecília Costa, Luiz Guilherme, Elaine Cristina, and Esther Góes. Set in Havana at the beginning of the 20th century, the story follows Maria Helena, a young woman who becomes pregnant after being abandoned by her fiancé. Interwoven with their stories is that of Túlio—a former addict turned upstanding teacher—who encounters a haunting figure from his past: his ex-sister-in-law, Fernanda.

Os Ossos do Barão is a Brazilian telenovela produced by SBT and originally broadcast from April 28 to September 8, 1997.
