A famous painter returns to Spain under a false name as he once had to run away, to meet his half gypsy daughter, who has become a flamenco dancer. He offers her his house, making popular rumors take flight.

On the hacienda of El Soto lives Doña Raimunda and her daughter Acacia as well. After being widowed, Raimunda married Esteban, who is secretly in love with Acacia and her, in turn, feels a deep rejection of him. Meanwhile, some young are courting Acacia. Min, a hard-boiled proprietress of a waterfront hotel, who has as her sweetheart Bill, a fisherman, brings up Nancy, a girl who was deserted by her own mother in infancy. However the Local authorities are trying to persuade Min that she is not a fit mother and that Nancy should be sent to school.

A girl has two suitors: a famous bullfighter who is in love and rejecting a pawn. His relationship with the bullfighter is hampered by the harassment to which he submits. After suffering a serious catch, the bullfighter lifesaving through the locket she gave him.

The action occurs in early 12th century Galicia during the reign of Alfonso VII. Sancho de Roelas, a nobleman who has fallen on hard times, announces to his lord Tello de Neira his intention to marry Elvira de Olite, also of impoverished noble lineage. Don Tello offers to be best man at the wedding but on seeing Elvira falls in love with her beauty and kidnaps her. She refuses to have sex with him and Sancho travels to Leon to get Alfonso's help. Alfonso finally comes to Tello's manor-house incognito and – after revealing his identity and finding out that Tello has raped Elvira – forces him to marry Elvira. He then executes Tello, restoring Elvira's honour and endowing her with half Tello's estate.
