The Life of Mirrors is one of the sections of the exhibition Luis Miguel Cintra - Small Theatre of the World. A commission by Serralves Foundation to Regina Guimarães and Saguenail, and constructed after an unpublished interview with Luis Miguel Cintra, this film is the result of a long and painstaking exercise of selecting and editing excerpts from films by Manoel de Oliveira in which Cintra participates as an actor. In this way, The Life of Mirrors is a reflective, retrospective essay film, which opens the Carte Blanche, thus establishing a gateway to Luis Miguel Cintra's cinematographic and cinephile career.

A woman travels in a compartment of a train and a young man sits next to her with whom, almost immediately, sparks strike: once they arrive at their destination the boy realizes that the young lady has forgotten a book and so follows her to to return it. When the two are alone at home, without having even introduced themselves, they soon end up in each other's arms and spend an intense night of love. At dawn the man leaves. Also at dawn that same morning, a man is killed in his garage and it is soon discovered that he is the brother of the young man on the train.

Following the death of her grandfather, Valentina settles with her husband Pierre, a sculptor, in the old family villa which she partly inherited (half of it belongs to her cousin Marta, who already resides there). Co-habitation proves to be awkward: Valentina is unscrupulous and uninhibited, while Marta is austere and virtuous - at least, on the surface.
