A commission by Serralves Foundation to Regina Guimarães and Saguenail, and constructed after an unpublished interview with Luis Miguel Cintra, this film is the result of a long and painstaking exercise of selecting and editing excerpts from films by Manoel de Oliveira in which Cintra participates as an actor. Two neighbours, young Vincenzo and old Mr Bartoloni, are utterly unhappy. On the one hand, Vincenzo must lead a miserable and frustrating life as he cannot find any regular job, despite his Arts degree. On the other, Mr Bartoloni is fed up with his despotic wife: the woman who used to be a beautiful artist is now a fat and shabby drunkard. The two men meet on a particularly sad night and, during an outburst, Mr. Bartoloni asks Vincenzo to help him to get rid of his wife by simulating an accident with the promise of a reward.

In the confusion of combat, two Italian get separated from their squadron and become hopelessly lost. As they wander the countryside attempting to find their lost comrades, they have to adopt all manner of outrageous disguises to avoid death at the hands of whomever holds the reigns of control.

A woman travels in a compartment of a train and a young man sits next to her with whom, almost immediately, sparks strike: once they arrive at their destination the boy realizes that the young lady has forgotten a book and so follows her to to return it. When the two are alone at home, without having even introduced themselves, they soon end up in each other's arms and spend an intense night of love. At dawn the man leaves. Also at dawn that same morning, a man is killed in his garage and it is soon discovered that he is the brother of the young man on the train.

Based on the short story "Sept petites croix dans un carnet" by Georges Simenon. "Sette piccole croci" was the first drama, non-series (what is today called a TV movie), as well as the first police thriller to be broadcast on Italian television. The story follows a tense cat-and-mouse chase across Paris on Christmas Eve.
