A talented young Peruvian pianist is offered her dream career with a renowned orchestra in Madrid: if only she can resolve a bureaucratic impasse to attain her residency visa.

Lola, a Mexican waitress working in Madrid, befriends a 30-year-old suicidal man who has borrowed $1,000,000 to spend on his last day on Earth, knowing he will be killed anyway if he fails to return the money. After meeting Lola, however, he decides that life might be worth living after all.

The story takes place between December 1994 and February 1995 in a small village near Valencia, Spain, where the lives of four people - a child, a thief and two doctors - intersect. At the same time, the great love of one woman's life suddenly crumbles and a young girl pays a high price for learning how to love.

Lola, who cleans a bank every morning, decides to rob it, convincing the others to join her: they'll use replica guns, dress as men, take Silvia hostage, and all will be smooth. But things go awry, including the fact that Lola's ex, Gustavo, is a cop. Desperation may be the mother of invention - and a corrupt bank manager its father.

After a fifteen-year exile, Thomas come back home to bury his father, a Republican fighter thrown in jail by Franco's regime who died without ever regaining his freedom.
