Begun in 1944/45, finished and released in 1949, this is a biography of the composer Carl Michael Ziehrer, who overcomes hypersensitivity in competitive situations which leads initially to failures in both career and romance.

The proud grandfather, retired General Count Hardberg, had actually already announced to his comrades that he would be the heir, but the grandson had become a granddaughter. Years later, Antonia had grown into a pretty but vivacious young woman. Crown Prince Don Carlos reunites with reformer Marquis Posa, who urges him to govern Flanders and broker peace. Carlos confesses forbidden love for his stepmother, Queen Elisabeth, who bids him serve Spain instead. Intrigue by the jealous Princess Eboli and Duke of Alba convinces King Philip II of betrayal. Posa sacrifices himself to save Carlos, but the king ultimately imprisons his son and hands him over to the Inquisition.

In order to impress a socially superior woman with money, an unsuccessful insurance agent commits sophisticated fraud: he concludes contracts with fictitious people and collects the insurance sums after their "death". However, his first fictional persona is his downfall.
