Based on the novel "Three Thieves" by Italian writer Umberto Notari. The banker's wife Ornano gives the key to her house to her lover Count Guido. The swindler Cascariglia uses this situation in his own way - he steals three million in money and his wife from the banker. In order to recover at least part of the stolen money (perhaps only the first part), the banker helps the adventurer get elected to parliament.

Based on a short story by O. Henry "The Ransom of the Red Chief". Three boys meet by chance. Myshko, a pioneer, is walking down the street in the ranks of a pioneer unit, while the homeless Semen is standing behind the unit, and Mr. Zhorzhyk is looking out of the window. The second time the boys meet is in the Crimea, where Myshko travels with the pioneers, the panych in a soft carriage with a bonnet, and Semen between the cars. Semen is kidnapped by bandits who mistake him for Zhorzhyk. Meanwhile, Zhorzhyk escapes from his bondage to a pioneer detachment. Soon, Semyon ends up there as well.

The film takes place somewhere abroad. One of the characters in the film, novice Morne, rescues a fisherman girl, Armela, who loses her mind from terror and seriously begins to believe that she is the "goddess of the winds". The monks of the monastery use this not without benefit. Armela's father finds his daughter and takes her home. Morne, in love with the girl, leaves the monastery and returns to his former profession of an artist. Soon Armela recovers and marries Morne.

After the death of her father, young Irina becomes the sole support of the family, as her mother is seriously ill and her little sister is still too young. One day during a walk she meets the artist Vladimir and falls in love with him. The two begin to date. Vladimir, having fallen in love with Irina, wants to get rid of his connection with a married woman Elena. Elena's husband has been watching the lovers for a long time and the farewell date of Vladimir and Elena serves as an excuse for him to challenge his rival to a duel. During the duel Vladimir dies. Having learned about the death of her beloved, Irina dies of a heart attack. Her mother, left all alone, mourns her daughter's death bitterly.

In 1907, the Russian authorities learn that a revolutionary known as 'Granddad' is living in hiding with his brother. The revolutionary is soon arrested and sent to Siberia. After ten years of struggling to survive in harsh conditions, he is finally released when the Tsarist government is overthrown in February 1917. He is welcomed home as a hero, but he soon finds that even his own son has different views than he does about the future of Russia.
